Primary students are working hard to learn their phonics skills using our new Language Arts curriculum, CKLA Skills. In Skills lessons, students practice sounds, phonemic awareness, handwriting skills, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. These skills help students build awareness of the connection between reading and writing while they build confidence as readers and writers.
Pictured are students working on a Skills lesson where they are learning the different spelling combinations of the long a sound /ae/ 'ay', 'a_e', 'ai' as in day, cake and rain using a word sort. On the wall is a reference chart for students to refer to that shows how their mouth should be shaped to make the different sounds in the vowel valley,diphthongs, fricatives, nasals, and more.
Northwestern Elementary students are enjoying the opportunity to shop the new PBIS cart. PBIS is a schoolwide intervention that supports students making positive choices and demonstrating the Warrior Way: Respectful, Responsible, Safe.
Students earn tickets by demonstrating the Warrior Way and then have the opportunity to shop for trinkets or special privileges (line leader, lunch bunch, ect.) of their choice. Pictured are some 2nd grade student shoppers.

Northwestern Local Schools is closed today, Friday, January 19th.
NW Elementary Students who participated in the Warrior Youth Basketball Home League in December are eligible to come and play at halftime of the Varsity game tomorrow, January 19. Meet in the junior high gym at 7:30 p.m. to receive your camp T-shirt and prepare to go out at halftime of the varsity game around 8:00 p.m. All NW Basketball Home League participants will get into the varsity game for free. However, parents and guests will have to purchase tickets at the gate.

Students in Mrs. Grieser's 8th grade social studies classes have been studying the Revolutionary War using the resources in Gallopade. Gallopade is an online curriculum that is full of primary and secondary sources that bring history to life for our students. They are learning about historic battles including Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, and Yorktown as well as some of the famous individuals of the time like Abigail Adams, George Washington, and Phillis Wheatley. To review for their upcoming assessment, students were engaged in a fun and competitive Kahoot! game to check their understanding of the unit.
Kahoot! is an online, group trivia game that can be customized with any content to create engaging quizzes in just minutes. Not just for school use, Kahoot! can be a fun family game too! For more information see https://kahoot.com/.
The Warrior Way Cafe is back again this year! As a part of Schoolwide PBIS at the Junior Senior High School, students can earn opportunities to get coffee or other hot drinks by following the Warrior Way.
Positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) is a schoolwide approach that aims to establish positive student culture necessary to create a safe and effective learning environment for all students.

January is School Board Recognition Month in Ohio. We recognized our five board members at this month's board meeting. Our two newest board members, Matthew Cox and Eric Renegar, were also sworn in to duty. We appreciate their service to Northwestern Local Schools!

The Aztecs used it as currency. Robert Falcon Scott took it to the Antarctic. The 3,700-year-long history of chocolate is full of twists and turns, making it a rich and rewarding research topic. In this unit, students explore primary documents and conduct independent research to better understand the strange and wonderful range of roles that chocolate has played in cultures around the world throughout its long history.
Pictured are Mrs. Scaggs' sixth grade students doing an introductory activity as they prepare to write a short piece aimed at convincing readers that their favorite kind of chocolate is the best; white, dark or milk chocolate. Throughout these activities, students learn to develop their positions by carefully analyzing source documents, and building their arguments on solid, relevant evidence.
